EXCELLENT SEASON'S END

There was a good turnout of nearly 50 for our excellent Club Dinner on Friday 8th April at The Rectory Field.

– Unfortunately, illness prevented our Guest Speaker, Ireland & British Lions and of course, past Askeans Coach, Stewart McKinney and our own wordsmith, Dave Shute from being there - Other guests, however, stepped in to fill the breach (More about that later on). There was a good representation of past players across the ages, current players and a good number as well from University of Greenwich RFC, (Greenwich Students) -

Current players, including Greenwich Students

...And players from yesteryear

Our Chairman Steve Homewood was our MC extraordinaire, proposing toasts throughout the evening, introducing speakers and ensuring it was all in good order – ‘In the nicest possible taste!’

In his role as Chair of Trustees, Friends of Askean RFC, Paul Walsh presented a cheque for £500 to Greenwich Students, which reflected the charity’s Purpose of supporting and promoting rugby in Greenwich, through Askean RFC.

Consistent with our welcome at the Rectory Field in our first season here, Blackheath Sports Club provided excellent hospitality – meal, bar and table service. Chairman Steve presented bouquets and expressed Askeans’ sincere thanks to Marilyn, Linda, Kerina and Chef Dempsey

In turn, Marilyn said a few great words expressing how much Blackheath Sports Club have enjoyed Askeans’ presence this year (Well, most times!)

The ever popular ‘Envelope Raffle raised £ 500 and prizes were won by: Jack Henderson – Rugby ball, signed by Northampton Team James Roddy - £25 Adam Maguire - £15

The Toast to the Club proposed by Chairman Steve reflected our season – It’s been challenging – and let’s press on.

Team Captain Jack Henderson’s Response was deft and reflected Chairman Steve’s Toast, throwing down a challenge to players to carry on playing – and to play regularly.

Jack also presented the awards:

Player of the Year - Nic Patten

Most Improved Player - Rob Stanley

Top Try Scorer - Charlie King

Players' Player of the Year - Tom Henderson

Commemorative Ties were also presented -

Charlie King receives his '100 Games' tie

Ciaran O'Flynn receives his '50 Games' tie

And so to ‘Filling the breach’ - Jeff Woollen and Robert Noble stepped up to deliver speeches in place of Stewart McKinney which entertained, although for those of us of advanced years and a sensitive disposition, were somewhat ‘Lost in Translation!’ The final word, however, was quite rightly delivered by our irrepressible Director of Rugby, Ian Lunn, who tapped into the theme of ‘Never Give up’ with a heartfelt speech of integrity, sincerity and burning honesty – Nothing else to say………….

Here is a list of those who were there…..
